CUFFS: MEDIA LANGUAGE, REPRESENTATION OF CHARACTERS, SOCIAL ISSUES AND CONTEXTS

We watched Cuffs using ClickView and worked from the OCR GCSE text book starting at page 5. Throughout the lesson I took notes of important information below:

  • Arc Pan: Curved movement of the camera around a subject.
  • Non-diegetic sound, not happening in the scene. (E.G. Music)
  • Arc Pan can be used to show what is happening in a characters mind or what they are feeling, for example the camera arc pans around Jake to show his disorientation in a situation.
  • Two Show: Two people in frame
  • Focus Pull: Change Focus mid-shot
  • Reaction Shot: shows characters reaction
  • Motivated Edit: A cut that is motivated by the story/an event that has just happened
  • Shot Reverse Shot: (Example: show conversation between two people)
  • Hard Cut: A hard cut shows... (don't use the term 'switch')

  • Audience Response Theory Framework Model:
  • Bloomer and Cats: Escapism, Diversion, Entertainment, comedy.
  • Personal Identity: We like to watch things that relate with our views.
  • Personal Relationships: We like to build social bonds through sharing media and discussing things we've seen / are going to see.
  • Surveillance: Fulfil the need for information, to know what's going on.
  • Closeup: Allow the audience to understand a characters reactions, emotions, thoughts and feelings.
  • The longer screen time a character has the more significant they are to the story.

        Characters in Cuffs:
  1. Jake
  2. Ryan
  3. Simon
  4. Donna
  5. Lino
  6. CSI Vickers
  7. Jo Moffat
  8. Felix
  • Jake and Simon, two gay characters, their relationship is hinted at when they make eye contact in episode 1.
